Tater Tots

This dish is was created from leftovers! I had made too much quinoa and wasn't in the mood to eat it all but I hate to waste any food. So I looked in my fridge and thought about what I could create. I had a meal plan to make my black-bean burger and was going to make homemade fries. Then it came to me the perfect solution tater tots! I used to love having tots as a kid! This is a super simple recipe that takes my childhood classic and made it so much better for you. Get your kiddos in the kitchen with this one because it's fun to make and they will love the taste!

Why I try not to buy frozen hashbrowns, fries, or tater tots: Most brands (even the "healthy ones") have ingredients like Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Cane Sugar, Dextrins, lots of sodium, Gums, and Citric Acid. When you can make your own food, you eliminate the need for all these toxic additives. Now, these ingredients listed above won't hurt you from time to time, but when you can make something that tastes delicious with minimal whole food ingredients I always opt for that option! Plus these are so delicious and customizable!

Makes 18-22 tots depending on how big you make them.


  • 1/2 cup Homemade Mashed Potatoes*

  • 1 cup Quinoa (cooked)

  • 2 Tablespoons flour* + 1 tbsp ground flaxseed

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • optional: add in seasoning or herbs of your liking!

* I make my mashed potatoes with russet potatoes, a little organic grass fed butter, and cashew milk!*

* I used Oat flour, but can be subbed with gluten-free, whole wheat or almond meal Might work) I add ground flaxseed for healthy fats to balance out the carbohydrates, but you can just use more flour if need.


In a large bowl mix the cooked quinoa, flour, and ground flaxseed. This using your hands mix in the mashed potatoes until everything is sticking together. then shape into whatever tot shape you like, you can do little patties or logs!

Baked at 425 for 15-20 min. Flipping halfway on a nonstick surface. You can also cook these stove top for quicker cook time. Just use a pan and a little oil for really chrispy edges!
